Limoncello: Sunshine in a Bottle

Limoncello Bottle

At Black Horse Distillery, we believe every bottle tells a story — and few spirits tell theirs quite as brightly as Limoncello. Vibrant, zesty, and unmistakably Mediterranean, Limoncello is more than just a liqueur — it’s a celebration of summer, sunshine, and tradition.

Limoncello’s origins trace back to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, and the island of Capri. While several families lay claim to its invention, one thing is certain: Limoncello is a cherished part of Italian life, often enjoyed ice-cold after dinner as a digestivo, or mixed into refreshing cocktails on warm days.

Its exact roots are the subject of friendly local rivalry. Some say it was first made by monks or fishermen, others by innkeepers who served it to guests in the early 20th century. But regardless of who created it, Limoncello has become a timeless symbol of Italian hospitality and zest for life.

How It’s Made

Authentic Limoncello is deceptively simple in its ingredients, but requires patience, balance, and quality to perfect. At Black Horse Distillery, we honour the traditional method with our own craft twist.

Our Limoncello is made from:

  • Lemon peels — carefully selected for their aromatic oils, with no bitter pith.

  • Neutral spirit — to extract the vibrant essence of the lemon peel over time.

  • Pure sugar syrup — added after infusion to round out the acidity with natural sweetness.

  • Time — we allow our peels to steep for days in cool, dark conditions, ensuring a rich, golden infusion full of citrus oil and aroma.

The result is a vivid, sunny liqueur with an intense lemon nose, smooth texture, and a clean, zesty finish that lingers on the palate.
